Mission Impossible: Fallout Review - 6 Ups & 3 Downs

1. The Action Sequences

Despite the substance of some of the milder scenes being a little off, Chris McQuarrie deserves a medal for his direction when it comes to the action sequences.

As hinted at already, they are visceral when they capture one-on-one fighting, they're expansive when they're in the open and they're ridiculously gripping no matter what form they take. And McQuarrie has the appetite for some of the most inventive shots in modern action movies, frequently taking us into tight spaces nobody else would, or onto Ethan Hunt's shoulder to really feel the action.

The result is easily some of the best action film-making in decades, and this is absolutely a high point in that respect for the Mission Impossible series.
