Mission Impossible: Fallout Review - 6 Ups & 3 Downs

2. Tom Cruise Is STILL Irresistible

It's very hard not to want Mission Impossible movies to just go on forever. As one other character says to Ethan Hunt at one point, the world is always safe because he's there and he ALWAYS will be. He's a constant and thanks to Tom Cruiss sharing Paul Rudd's grace in aging, there's a possibility that we might get see 10 MI movies. They'd be worth it, at the very least.

But there's even a hint at times that his Hunt is getting old - he sags in battle with younger men, he's no longer quite keeping up and he has to work even harder and be even more daring and more innovative. But the narrative that really lasts here is the idea that he has no choice but to save the world, which is why he CAN'T give up.

During the excellent bathroom scene, he pauses for a moment, realises the odds are stacked against him and then sighs and rushes back in headfirst. It's a wonderful little character moment and added to Cruise's effervescent charm (which transcends even the poor script), he's still an absolute delight to watch.
