2. The Last Savage (Addio ultimo uomo) (1978)

Prosperi and Jacopetti were not the only pioneering team behind the most infamous Mondos, Alfredo and Angelo Castiglioni were hot on their heels with this disgusting little entry. In 1978 they were still finding ethnic quirks around the world to revolt the viewer and I would not advise you to watch this film unless you have a stomach of steel or a very jaded palate. It makes many of its Mondo brethren look like episodes of Sesame Street. Among the scenes we are treated to a dog killed, skinned and eaten, grisly Vietnam post-combat footage, Ritual scarification, a bloated rotten dead African man being dressed for his funeral, female circumcision, Africans having sex in mud huts, Western peepshows, a tribesman having his willy cut off. The Last Savage is a pretty dumb title because in this film there are bloody hoards of them! Some stuff may be fake or re-enacted in front of the camera but that doesn't detract from the film's nastiness and ability to gross us out. The only Mondo movie I ever watched that was more repugnant than The Last Savage was Africa Addio and at least that film had a political viewpoint and a message to impart. The Last Savage is just a genuinely putrid free for all.
