Monsters University: 10 Reasons You Should Be Excited

Find out why the Monsters, Inc. prequel looks set to be one of the best films of 2013.

A much younger Mike and Sully

Back in the mid-noughties, Disney were in full swing with their childhood butchering direct-to-video sequels of their many classics. And they had their sights set on Pixar€™s back catalogue, to which they owned the rights. A poor man€™s version of Toy Story 2 had already been curbed, but there seemed no way to stop animation division Circle 7 producing destructive sequels to Pixar€™s films (including a Toy Story 3 centred around a Buzz Lightyear recall). Thankfully, Disney brought Pixar in 2006, making John Lasseter head of their entire animation division, who quickly stopped the onslaught.

One sequel that was thankfully stopped was Monsters, Inc. 2. The idea, however, of revisiting Monstropolis has come back in the form of a prequel, due to be released next summer, this time under the reassuring Pixar banner. After the success of Brave a few months ago, it looks like the house that Woody built is now well past the disappointment of Cars 2 and with their 2013 feature now less than a year away, it€™s time to admit that we€™re incredibly excited for Monsters University.

Pixar€™s 14th feature film, making Monsters, Inc. their third multi-movie franchise, marks Dan Scanlon€™s first time as a director for the animation house and looks set to be one of next years best films.

But just why should you be so excited about Monsters University? Find out on the next page, but first check out one reason to be wary.

One Reason To Be Cautious - Boo

The relationship between child-phobic Sully and escaped toddler Boo was the emotional heart of Monsters, Inc. Throughout the film, we see the committed scarer€™s heart melt, eventually discovering, thanks to her, that laughter is stronger than screams. The film€™s ending €“ the emotional reunion between the two €“ has to be one of the best moments in any Pixar film. When a continuation of the Monsters, Inc. world was first announced, it seemed obvious that it would develop Boo and Sully€™s relationship, perhaps exploring what would happen to Boo as she grows up, knowing monsters exist; a less one sided approach to growing up than Toy Story 3. Now we know the film will be a prequel, Boo is as the big elephant in the room. Such an integral part of the original, her absence could quite easily be felt. I€™m certain they€™ll be something up the film€™s sleeve that can match the emotion, but there is an even greater danger. If Boo appears in some way, or an obvious reference is made, it could threaten the integrity of the film (which, lest we forget, is set long before Sully is aware of Boo's existence). Pixar have proven themselves as narrative geniuses, so this is likely needless worrying, but it is something that casts a shadow much more than in any of the other series continuations. But forget worrying - it's time to start getting excited about Monsters University. Click next to start the list...
