3. An Awesome Trailer
Back in June, a year before the film was scheduled for release, we got our first glimpse of Monsters University. It may have only been a short, seventy second teaser, but boy did it get us excited. A clever riff on the trailer for the original (which played up the main conceit of being the story behind the monsters in the closet), it shows Sully pulling a particularly funny prank on the easy to anger Mike. Aside from the humour, it is a great showcase of just how much higher the quality of computer animation has got in the last decade. Both main characters not only look younger, but they feel fresher. Cleverly, four different versions were released, each one having Mike experiencing a different dream. The same approach was taken with the latest trailer for the Hobbit, which had four alternate endings. It forces the viewer to watch the trailer multiple times just to see it all; a smart way to get your film in the audiences minds months in advance. Teaser trailers for Pixars films tend to contain entirely unique footage, so its unlikely that these mishaps will make it into the final film, but it sets the tone perfectly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sED6FRXIHJc
