Mortal Kombat is one of gaming's most iconic game franchises and has continued to do well with fans during its 28-year lifetime. So, understandably, when it was officially announced that James Wan had been attached to produce a reboot film, fans were more than just excited. Standing as a new franchise separate from the two films from the 90s (Probably for best!) the film is currently set to release in 2021.

The flick itself has had an interesting development history. After the second Mortal Kombat film failed to impress audiences, the franchise has been on hold. But back in 2010 Kevin Tancharoen released Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, a short film that was used to pitch a gritty return to the series to Warner Brothers. Unfortunately, Tancharoen left the project in 2013 after continuous pre-production issues, such as the budget being too small. After three years with little progress, it was looking likely that the film would never be released.

Fast forward seven years later, and now the new movie has wrapped filming in its entirety and we're getting closer to the release by the day. But what's been confirmed so far?

Probably more than you would expect...

7. The Director And Producers

It was when James Wan signed on to produce the film back in 2015 that the project gained the second wind it needed to actually move out of production hell. Wan has been involved with several horror films over the years, directing the original Saw movie and recently moving into superhero blockbusters.

After a successful string of movies including Fast & Furious 7 and Aquaman, Wan seems ready to take on the fighting franchise. Alongside the filmmaker, Todd Garner is listed as producing too. Todd Garner has worked on several Adam Sandler and Kevin James films, so take of that what you will.

The following year ,Simon McQuoid was confirmed as the director. While Wan has worked on a range of different films over the years, this will be McQuoid's debut as a feature director.

However, he does have experience as a director, actually working on advertisements for Call of Duty, Halo and PlayStation. Just a quick browse at a few of these video game-based commercials not only shows McQuoid's skill as a filmmaker but also his understanding of the source material.

Mortal Kombat seems the perfect project for this up and coming talent to prove himself as a feature film director.
