20 Most Underrated Horror Movies EVER

18. The Last Exorcism

The Last Exorcism
Lionsgate

The Last Exorcism was rather unfairly lumped in with the dozens, if not hundreds of supernaturally themed found footage films released in the early 2010s in an attempt to cash-in on the subgenre's surging popularity.

But this is actually an uncommonly clever deconstruction of the prototypical Exorcism Film that has a few sly tricks up its sleeve, leading the audience down a seemingly familiar path before flipping the script completely - at least for a time.

It doesn't hurt that Patrick Fabian gives a strong performance as our troubled minister protagonist, and Ashley Bell is fantastic as the apparently possessed young farm girl he's sent to help.

It's astonishing what the cast and crew pulled off on a mere $1.8 million, even accepting the found footage style, and though many will take issue with the film's final rug-pull, it can't undermine how tense and brilliantly subversive The Last Exorcism is leading up to it.
