10 More Sequels That Totally Ruined The Previous Movie's Ending

9. The Orphanage Is Closed - Blues Brothers 2000

Pacific Rim Uprising Sequel
Universal

The Blues Brothers revolves around the efforts of Jake (John Belushi) and Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) to save the Roman Catholic orphanage in which they were raised from foreclosure by paying off its hefty property tax bill.

And at film's end the pair succeed, even if their antics throughout the story also land them in prison.

But by the time the 18-years-later sequel rolls around, Jake has died - a result of John Belushi's own 1982 passing - with John Goodman's Mack effectively taking his place.

Yet an almost equally brutal blow comes when Elwood is released from jail and swiftly learns that the orphanage they saved in the first film has closed down and been demolished.

Given that the first film was so centrally preoccupied with saving that orphanage, this combined with Belushi's absence got the movie off to an instant double-bummer start.

That is to say, there's good reason that Blues Brothers 2000 is a largely forgotten sequel to a stone-cold classic.
