10 More Sequels That Totally Ruined The Previous Movie's Ending

7. Paul Gets Divorced - Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2

Pacific Rim Uprising Sequel
Sony Pictures Releasing

The first Paul Blart: Mall Cop ended with the buffoonish Paul (Kevin James) foiling a heist at the mall, saving the day, and winning the affection of his love interest Amy (Jayma Mays), who he is shown later marrying at the mall.

However, 2015's sequel opted to unpick this ending in almost parodically cruel fashion. In its very first scene, we learn that Amy left Paul after just six days of marriage.

Amy apparently had some "regrets" about the wedding, but her doctor less diplomatically called it "uncontrollable vomiting." Basically, it seems, the prolonged sight of Paul made Amy physically ill. Yikes.

And because that wasn't brutal enough, about a minute later we see Paul's mother Margaret (Shirley Knight) die when she's hit by a milk truck.

It's a bizarrely grim note on which to start the sequel, and even accepting that Jayma Mays was unavailable to return as Amy due to scheduling conflicts with the TV show Glee, did the opening scene really need to steamroll the previous film's ending quite so gracelessly?
