20 Movies That Could've Been Horror Movies

18. The Truman Show

As absurdly entertaining as The Truman Show is, it's tough to deny the existential terror of its central concept, of an unwanted child being legally adopted by a TV network and unknowingly made the star of a 24/7 reality show.

Countless horror movies are about the very concept of "your reality isn't what you think," and so it's incredibly easy to picture a version of The Truman Show that functions more like Jordan Peele's Get Out, emphasising the abject horror of being trapped in a reality of someone else's making.

And in an era where we've got more cameras pointed at us than at any other moment in history all while social media allows the mundane to become viral, The Truman Show's themes of surveillance and celebrity feel more relevant than ever.

Though this satirical dramedy is a basically perfect movie, there's also clear potential for a more overtly horrific riff on the same core concept.
