9. Down: Some Muddled Scenes

In a film full of action and excitement, and scenes that made sure to keep viewers on the edge of their seats, there are a few scenes that drop the ball on keeping its action coherent.

Nearer to the end of the film are some scenes that feel visually muddled, especially that of Deku's fight with Flect Turn (who ended up not being a particularly compelling villaint). The many cuts can get jarring, and the effects added to Flect Turn's scenes in particular filled the whole screen without consideration for framing.

Most of the scenes work overall, which unfortunately only makes the problems of its worst moments more obvious to the audience.

Not only were those scenes visually muddled, the writing drops the ball when it comes to the villain. His motivation feels shoehorned in and entirely too melodramatic for someone whose simple horrific bigotry didn't really need explaining.

While overall, the film feels thematically and narratively strong, the muddled writing and scenes including its villain could have been worked over, in keeping with the simplicity of the rest of its story.
