Nerve Review: 6 Ups & 5 Downs

4. Internal Logic Is Flimsy At Best

As on-the-pulse as the movie feels with modern tech trends, there's also an unfortunate lack of internal logic regarding the "rules" of the titular game above all else.

Even ignoring the implausibility of these people's phones managing to stay charged despite appearing to constantly be in use, the movie never really makes it clear how both the players and watchers interface with the game.

The fact that the players have to record the dares themselves feels like a clumsy addition solely thrown in to add tension to a certain ladder sequence mid-way through the movie, even though it limits what the players can actually do and is actually betrayed itself several times during the movie (where Roberts' character gets someone else to record her dare for her).

This is without even mentioning some third-act shenanigans that basically uproot any and all plausibility the movie had, with no convincing explanation given for the goalposts being shifted.

If you watch this movie, be prepared to accept that it's clever but also on shaky ground in terms of logical consistency.
