20 Awesome Recent Horror Movies That Flopped At The Box Office

6. Ash

Ash was the second feature from director Flying Lotus (Kuso), and though it wore its influences shamelessly on its sleeve - namely Alien, The Thing, and Event Horizon - it nevertheless served up a visually stunning slice of body horror elevated by a strong central performance from Eiza González.

Yet even with RLJE Films releasing it in over 1,000 cinemas in the U.S., Ash grossed just $1.1 million worldwide, and while we don't know its exact budget, the kaleidoscopic visuals ensure it cost many, many more times than that.

There are a few obvious issues here - for one RLJE didn't really market the film much at all, the trailers themselves weren't great, and with only a few exceptions, body horror remains an extremely niche subgenre where the mainstream is concerned.

It's easy to picture Ash doing much better on streaming, but even then, it's probably quite the steep climb to breaking even.
