20 Awesome Recent Horror Movies That Flopped At The Box Office
19. The Toxic Avenger
Even though Cineverse made the ballsy decision to release their long-delayed reboot of The Toxic Avenger in almost 2,000 U.S. cinemas, one can't imagine they genuinely believed it would be a stonking breakout hit.
After all, it spent almost two years languishing in post-festival limbo while struggling to find a distributor, no matter that The Toxic Avenger was ultimately a fun, fitting reimagining of the classic Troma franchise, and one which critics also embraced.
Even with Peter Dinklage leading the cast, it topped out at just $3.4 million globally, and while the exact budget isn't known, it clearly wasn't a micro-budget production, which might've made this number impressive.
But it's a flop that isn't remotely surprising, considering both the extremely niche nature of the IP and the fact that the film simply isn't very commercial - enough that it was even deemed "unreleasable" at one point.
Given that many assumed it would end up going straight to streaming, the fact it screened in cinemas at all is basically a damn miracle.
