20 Awesome Recent Horror Movies That Flopped At The Box Office
1. The Shrouds
And finally we have by far the most predictable flop on this list - David Cronenberg's new body horror drama The Shrouds.
Cronenberg's fascinatingly morbid film is also his most personal to date, serving as an unsubtle but mesmerising meditation on his own grief following the death of his wife, Carolyn Zeifman, in 2017.
Though largely praised by critics and Cronenberg fans for its tender and materially strange examination of mortality, The Shrouds is simply the sort of left-field, tricky project that's going to lure few to the cinema outside of cinephiles and Cronenberg die-hards.
And so, it's not remotely shocking that the $16 million film grossed just $1.5 million globally, with its widest U.S. release being just 279 cinemas.
Hopefully the distributors at least saw this one coming and simply wanted to be in business with a world-class genre filmmaker, because it was clear from the moment The Shrouds premiered at Cannes that it wasn't going to move the financial needle much.
