20 Announced Movie Sequels NOBODY Expected

15. Ali G: Who Iz I?

Even accepting that Ali G Indahouse was a solid box office hit in 2002, there was nothing to suggest that Sacha Baron Cohen was keen to make a sequel, especially given the many other characters he'd enjoyed even greater success with - most of all Borat.

But last summer reports emerged that Cohen was spotted filming something as Ali G, and back in July it was indeed revealed that Cohen had filmed an Ali G sequel in secret, reprising the role on-screen for the first time in roughly 20 years.

The sequel, Ali G: Who Iz I?, is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios for a theatrical release this coming October, but upon the sequel's announcement, many expressed scepticism that Ali G - a character who was thoroughly of his time - would struggle to strike a nostalgic chord in 2026.

As ever we'll have to wait and see, but as decades-later comedy sequels go, recent few have been more surprising.
