Pixels, the new film about aliens that invade the world as blocky versions of classic video game characters, hasn't received as much hype as it perhaps should have. It's based on an incredible short (viewable on YouTube here), is directed by Christopher Columbus and features a whole host of classic gaming characters. And yet, overshadowing all of that, is the presence of Adam Sandler. The audience that would typically be brought in by the director of Home Alone and the promise of a nostalgia trip akin to Wreck-It-Ralph are the exact same who would be put off my the "comedian's" presence in a film. Instead of being a celebration of gaming culture, Pixels has come across as another in Sandler's long line of back-slapping features. This latest behind-the-scenes featurette on the film attempts to rectify that by keeping Sandler in the background, putting focus on how the film's seeped in gaming nostalgia and giving the rest of the cast a chance to talk about their own 8-bit memories. While there's still a question about the balance of Sandler hi-jinks and gaming shout-outs, it at least shows there's real care behind bringing the likes of Q*bert and Donkey Kong to life. Check it out above. Also revealed today is a new British poster for the film, which shows Pac-man chomping on London, suggesting the film's destruction will take on a more global scope. Pixels is out on 24th July in the US and 12th August in the UK.
