7. Tom Hanks' Gritty, Compelling Performance

News of the World Tom Hanks
Universal

There's perhaps no movie star more reliable than Tom Hanks, because even when he's appearing in a rare bad movie, he always shows up and gives it his all.

While in this case the material denies Hanks the opportunity to really sink his teeth into Kidd, this is nevertheless one of the grittier and more grizzled characters the actor has played in quite some time.

At this point in his career Hanks could play the paternal hero role in his sleep, so Kidd isn't at all a stretch for him nor one that will merit much serious awards consideration

However, it is nevertheless great fun to see him playing around in the western sandbox for the first time ever (unless you count his role as Woody in Toy Story, of course).

For Hanks' fans, his steely presence and compelling performance alone will make the film well worth watching.
