Nicolas Cage: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

2. Evan Lake - Dying Of The Light (2014)

Cage, Cage Cage...what happened, mate? Once the toast of Tinseltown and a genuine megastar, these days Cage will star in just about anything, including humdrum family adventure films like the National Treasure series and lots and lots of action/crime/mystery thrillers. These films tend to follow a pattern: mid-budgeted, low box-office and even lower Rotten Tomatoes scores. These films are failures, pretty much every single one of them, but Cage continues to do sign on for them presumably because he still owes scores of money to the IRS. Dying of the Light is one of the worst, with Cage playing an ageing CIA agent who is being forced to retire (that never goes well in the moves, does it?). The most notable thing about this typically uneven Cage performance is his prosthetic ear, which makes a nice change from his show-stealing, ever more ridiculous hairpieces. Once great director Paul Schrader came out after the film and practically disowned it, saying that the studio tool the film away from him and re-edited, scored and mixed without his consultation. Cage, however, can't really hide behind such excuses. His performance would have been poor, regardless of studio interference.
