Old Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs
4. It's Shyamalan's Most Twisted Movie
If Shyamalan's more recent filmography has seen him travel down a notably darker path, Old feels like the next logical step in that progression, turning in by far his most off-the-wall, demented movie to date.
Given that the bulk of the film depicts the horrifying physical and mental effects of rapid ageing on its central characters, Shyamalan takes the opportunity to deliver a number of extremely unsettling scenarios for them.
From a rapidly-aged child suddenly giving birth to an even more disturbing body horror situation that shouldn't be spoiled, Shyamalan nails the visceral, existential terror of watching your own life slip away, even with the restrictions of a PG-13 rating.
Not everything here will work for everyone - the childbirth segment will prove especially divisive - but it is nothing if not a talented director taking a hard, ambitious swing at the material.
