Oscar 2014: FINAL Nomination Predictions

Best Sound Mixing

1. Gravity2. Captain Philips 3. Lone Survivor4. 12 Years a Slave5. Inside Llewyn Davis(Alt: Pacific Rim) A lot of what was just said about Sound Editing holds for Sound Mixing. That means Gravity and Captain Phillips are leading the category in this filed as well. Now even though there are a lot of similarities between the two categories, they rarely match up one-to-one, and because mixing refers to the balance between sound effects and dialogue, movies with less action and a bit more dialogue usually fare better in the Best Sound Mixing category. For this reason, I feel even more confident of Lone Survivor's chances in Sound Mixing, given its mix between intense war scenes and emotional dialogue. 12 Years a Slave doesn't quite have any intense war scenes on the level of Lone Survivor, but I think the film makes the cut for roughly the same reason. Last year, you may remember the big to do that was made over the fact that the songs of Les Miserables were recorded live, which pretty much guaranteed it a nomination in this category. Inside Llewyn Davis used the exact same live recording method as Les Miserables, but because it hasn't played up this fact half as much as more traditional movie musical, it's definitely no slam dunk. Even so, the members of the branch are hopefully savvy enough to know this fact without having it shoved in their face, so I think it just barely makes it in.

A film fanatic at a very young age, starting with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movies and gradually moving up to more sophisticated fare, at around the age of ten he became inexplicably obsessed with all things Oscar. With the incredibly trivial power of being able to chronologically name every Best Picture winner from memory, his lifelong goal is to see every Oscar nominated film, in every major category, in the history of the Academy Awards.
