Another big, pleasant surprise this year was Willem Dafoe receiving his fourth acting nomination for his universally acclaimed performance as Vincent van Gogh in At Eternity's Gate.

The movie hasn't had much momentum at all on the awards circuit so far, but a Golden Globe nomination for Dafoe may well have prompted some voters to actually watch their screeners and see what it was all about.

Dafoe hasn't got a chance of winning up against the more volcanic likes of Christian Bale and Rami Malek, but if nothing else, it's another feather in the cap of one of our greatest living actors, who might one day finally scoop that damn Oscar.
