Oscar Nominations 2019: 6 Ups & 9 Downs

1. Marina De Tavira's Surprise Best Supporting Actress Nomination

The most surprising acting nomination this year is without question Marina De Tavira's Best Supporting Actress nod for her performance as Sofia in Roma.

While her co-star Yalitza Aparicio received almost two-dozen nominations across the guilds, De Tavira earned not a single one, and just about nobody expected an Oscar nomination to be coming her way.

It's certainly a well-deserved nomination, though: her achingly human work holds up a mirror to Aparicio's focal performance, with each complimenting the other.

De Tavira being singled out is certainly encouraging for Roma's Oscar chances, even if she hasn't got a chance of winning the category against the likes of Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) and Amy Adams (Vice).
