Oscar Nominations 2019: 6 Ups & 9 Downs
5. Snubbed: Ethan Hawke For Best Actor (First Reformed)
This was always a bit of an outside possibility, but Ethan Hawke ran an incredibly passionate campaign for his performance in First Reformed, and after picking up significant traction on the precursor circuit, it really seemed like he'd scoop a Best Actor nomination.
Though writer-director Paul Schrader did at least score a Best Original Screenplay nod, the film was otherwise shut out, with what was arguably Hawke's career-best performance being incredulously snubbed.
It seems likely that Hawke's slot ended up going to Willem Dafoe (At Eternity's Gate), though was Hawke's performance really lesser than Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) and Viggo Mortensen (Green Book)? Nonsense.
