Oscar Nominations 2021: The Snubs And Surprises

Sound of Metal always seemed on the cusp of significant awards contention with just Riz Ahmed being a sure thing for a nomination. With these nominations, just like Judas and the Black Messiah, Sound of Metal pushed past contenders Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and One Night in Miami and became a six time nominee.

In addition to the always assumed Ahmed, Paul Raci got a supporting nod and the film picked up nominations in Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing and Best Sound. The story of a heavy metal drummer who suddenly loses his hearing is increasing in popularity with each passing day and rightfully so as it is one of the best films of the season.

Whether it will manage to secure any wins remains to be seen but keep an eye on it in Editing and, in particular, Sound which is an extremely key component of the film. It is one to watch as the season goes on.
