1. Women Talking Lands Just Two Nominations
When Sarah Polley's drama Women Talking premiered at the Telluride Film Festival back in September, it was immediately earmarked as a major frontrunner for the Best Picture Oscar.
But despite universal critical acclaim, its standing in the wider Oscar race quickly cooled, unaided by a disastrous box office performance signalling a lack of public interest in the film.
And so, despite much vocal campaigning, Women Talking ended up with just two nominations, for Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay, while possible nods for Director, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, and Original Score were left firmly out of reach.
Given the Academy's noted penchant for snubbing female directors, many were particularly disappointed that Polley missed out on a nomination for her work behind the camera.
These gripes aside, though, there was a lot to be happy about with this year's round of nominees. And so, here's what the Academy got right...
