8. Surprise: Stephanie Hsu Sneaks Into Best Supporting Actress
The Best Supporting Actress field was a tricky one to predict this year, especially with the sentiment among many that Jamie Lee Curtis' recent momentum would steal a slot away from her Everything Everywhere All At Once co-star Stephanie Hsu.
So what a relief it was to see Curtis and Hsu both nominated for the award. Given that Hsu, an on-the-rise actress, appeared to be getting overshadowed by Curtis' sheer star power and aggressive campaigning, it's a most beneficial outcome that both made it in.
While Best Supporting Actress is almost certainly going to Angela Bassett for her sublime work on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the nomination alone will give Hsu's career a major leg-up moving forward. It's a cliche but it's true - the nomination is basically the win.
