Oscar Nominations 2024: 8 Ups & 9 Downs
7. SHOCK: Anatomy Of A Fall Lands Five Nominations
Though Anatomy of a Fall is undeniably one of the past year's most acclaimed movies, films not in English always face a tougher climb when it comes to breaking out of the Best International Feature category - which Anatomy wasn't even selected for - and securing above-the-line nominations.
So it was a relief to see Justin Triet's superb drama not treated as a mere token nominee, given that it ended nabbing an impressive five nominations for Best Picture, Director (Triet), Actress (Sandra Hüller), Original Screenplay, and most surprisingly Film Editing, beating out expected nominee Barbie.
In fact, the Academy clearly loved the film enough that it's a shame they didn't spring for one more and give young Milo Machado Graner a Best Supporting Actor nomination, though Oscar voters are strangely averse to nominating child actors.
While it's unlikely that Anatomy will win any of these awards, to see it recognised among the best of the best is a satisfying outcome regardless.
