Oscar Nominations 2024: 8 Ups & 9 Downs

6. SHOCK: Barbie Misses Out On Director, Actress & Editing

Surely the most surprising "snubs" of this year's Oscars were seeing Barbie miss out on nominations for Best Director (Greta Gerwig) and Actress (Margot Robbie), given that both were widely forecasted.

Their exclusion from these categories instantly caused a furore online, with many especially decrying Gerwig's failure to be nominated in a Best Director field largely populated by men.

All the same, as successful as Barbie was, was Gerwig's direction really superior to the filmmakers likely nominated instead of her - either Justine Triet (Anatomy of a Fall) or Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest)?

And similarly, Robbie gave a highly entertaining turn in Barbie, but even if you resolve that she was more deserving of a Best Actress nod than Annette Bening (Nyad), the also not-nominated likes of Greta Lee (Past Lives) and Natalie Portman (May December) were worthier than both of them.

Barbie did just fine with its eight nominations, and missing out on Director and Actress simply weren't the injustices that its fans are already claiming them to be.
