Oscar Nominations 2024: 8 Ups & 9 Downs
8. SNUB: Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (Best Original Score)
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was one of 2023's best films and, if the Academy were a little less prejudiced against both animated movies and superhero fare, it would've earned some above-the-line nominations instead of a sole nod for Best Animated Feature.
While it was always going to be an uphill struggle to persuade voters to place it in Best Picture, leaving out Daniel Pemberton's gloriously inventive musical score is an egregious snub.
It's all the more ridiculous when you consider that the fifth Best Original Score slot ended up going to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, despite John Williams' score leaning heavily on the existing leitmotifs and, if we're being honest, not bringing much memorable new material to the table.
The Academy evidently loves Williams and rightly so, but his placement here for a relatively unremarkable score is nothing if not lazy voting.
