Oscar Nominations 2024: 8 Ups & 9 Downs
5. SNUB: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (Best Animated Feature)
The Best Animated Feature field got a lot right this year, by nominating the brilliant likes of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Boy and the Heron, Nimona, and Robot Dreams, ensuring a diverse mix of animated styles, budget levels, and stories.
But the fifth slot ended up going to Pixar's Elemental, in turn causing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem to be left out.
Given that Elemental is quite decisively one of Pixar's lesser, more typical offerings in recent years, it feels like Oscar voters got a little lazy here and just voted for the film from the acclaimed studio, rather than the more creative animated film which happened to have IP branding on it.
This sort of uninspired voting isn't exactly new for the Academy though, so it wasn't terribly surprising, but certainly disappointing all the same.
