The Wild Cards
10. Beasts of the Southern Wild
Hurricane Katrina may have been seven years ago, but the event still haunts our popular subconscious to this day. Especially after seeing all of the devistation Sandy left all along the North-Eastern Coast. In the case of Beasts, the devastation of Katrina is viewed through a supernatural/fantastical lens that no other project has really applied to it (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button doesn't count since it only used Katrina as a framing device). Newcomers Quvenzhané Wallis and Dwight Henry have been known to have a certain chemistry as father and daughter, and as it is inspired (at least the film is) by the aftermath of Katrina, this film has a nice and cozy spot on the outer rim of the nominees.
