Oscars 2013: 10 Things The Academy Got Wrong

4. Ang Lee Wins Best Director

Most of us were shocked when Ang Lee was announced as the Best Director winner, not because Lee didn't do a bang-up job directing the Hell out of Life of Pi, but because it was always assumed that given Ben Affleck couldn't win the award (as he wasn't even nominated in the first place), that the default winner would be Steven Spielberg for Lincoln. However, Oscar had other plans, and the little guy ended up going to Lee, who snagged his second Best Director win. Impressive though Lee's achievement was, and it's hard to be too mad at his win given how humble and likeable the guy seems, did he really deserve it? I'm not too convinced; though the Academy weren't going to give the gong to Michael Haneke or Benh Zeitlin in a million years, and David O. Russell was hardly deserving either, I can't help but feel the Academy really dropped the ball by not giving Spielberg his due here.
