Oscars 2013: 10 Things The Academy Got Wrong

3. Cutting Off A Speech About Bankrupt Visual Effects Houses

I must preface this complaint by conceding that, yes, whoever decided to have John Williams' Jaws theme play as the cut-off music whenever someone's acceptance speech went on too long is an absolute genius, it was at the expense of one of the ceremony's more important and impassioned speeches. As Life of Pi won Best Visual Effects, the artists appeared on stage and after saying their thank-yous, began to discuss the financial crisis involving visual effects studios in California that has seen Rhythm and Hues (the effects house behind Life of Pi) be forced to declare bankruptcy. However, the producers either didn't give a damn or didn't want the show to be politicised (though that would be ironic given Michelle Obama's cameo appearance), so they were promptly drowned out amid the Jaws theme, to the combined hilarity and bemusement of just about everyone. As so many people on Twitter remarked following the incident, stay classy, Oscar.
