1. Paperman for Best Animated Short
Finally, I would like to single out a nomination in one of the categories that many people tend to overlook. For those who forgot, Paperman is the short film that preceded Wreck-It Ralph when it screened in theaters. Gorgeously rendered and designed, it is one of the most beautiful little shorts I have ever seen, and managed to tell a more concise, engaging, satisfying story in 6 minutes and with no dialogue than most feature-length films this year. The film is a technical marvel, featuring computer animation made to mimic the classic hand-drawn style that Disney was built on. The result looks like a hand-drawn Disney film, but movement and fluidity are rendered far more realistically. The result is stunning, but it's really the storytelling that makes this one such a winner. Here's hoping it takes home the gold come Oscar night!
