5. ParaNorman for Best Animated Feature

This nomination wasn't a particularly big surprise: ParaNorman got great reviews when it came out and is considered by many to be one of if not the best animated film of the year. That said, its disappointing box office returns and cold audience reception didn't do it any favors, and I was worried that it would end up forgotten. If there were three nominations in this category (as there sometimes are), it is doubtful that it would have made the cut. And although the award is Wreck-It Ralph's to lose, for my money I thought ParaNorman was the superior film (though I enjoyed Wreck-It Ralph very much): it was edgy, unexpected, and far more mature, creative and quirky than it had any right to be. I'm glad it received recognition.
