3. Snubbing The Dark Knight Rises and The Hobbit in Technical Categories
This is certainly going to be my most controversial entry, but I stand by my opinion: Both The Dark Knight Rises and The Hobbit were above-average entertainments that suffered from severe drawbacks specifically
in the technical categories that so many people seem to think they deserve praise for. Both films were dragged down by horrendous pacing issues chalked up to sloppy editing. The cinematography in The Dark Knight Rises wasn't much to write home about either. It was good, but utilitarian - we've seen that style before from Nolan and Pfister. Plus, sequels rarely get nominated for best cinematography. But I actually found the cinematography in The Hobbit to be somewhat horrendous - disregarding the 48fps controversy, the lighting was totally flat and ridiculously over-lit. Although there are a couple of categories I maybe
would have liked to see these films in - namely Best Original Score for The Dark Knight Rises (far and away the best part about the film - Hans Zimmer never disappoints) and Best Sound Editing for The Hobbit (if only for the Dolby Atmos mix, which was actually brilliant and something I wish more people were talking about). But other than that... I think it was a befitting fate for two very flawed films.
