Oscars 2014: 10 Movies The Academy Should Consider (But Won't)

9. The Great Gatsby - Joel Edgerton, Best Supporting Actor

Despite making a lot more money than expected, The Great Gatsby became the adaptation we knew it would be all along. Rather than being a faithful and respectful adaptation of the novel we're all forced to read in high school, Baz Luhrmann turned the film into a more flashy, vapid, and altogether hollow translation. Critics and fans of the book were split right down the middle, some praising the film's ambition while others crying foul that the film was more style over substance. Regardless of how you might feel about what Luhrmann did, we know one thing for sure: Joel Edgerton was in a league of his own in the film. The man completely stole the show each moment he was on screen, and gave a perfect performance as the arrogant and hot headed Tom Buchanan. One scene stands out in particular and proves that Edgerton deserves some Oscar gold for his performance, when all of the film's romantic plots come to a head and Gatsby goes up against Buchanan. Edgerton is completely unrecognizable in this film, and gives it his all. It's too bad that he wasn't starring in a better movie, because then he might have stood a chance at getting more recognition for his efforts.
