Oscars 2014: 10 Movies The Academy Should Consider (But Won't)

8. Fast And Furious 6 - Best Visual Effects

The Fast and Furious franchise may be nothing more than badass, popcorn movie fun, but that doesn't mean it can't get a little bit of respect. The franchise is wildly popular, and pretty impressive from a storytelling standpoint. Sure, it's an adrenaline-fueled spectacle first and foremost, and will never be nominated for best picture; but it should definitely get some attention in the technical categories. Specifically, a visual effects nomination. We know for a fact that the film isn't being considered for the category, since the Academy already released its list of ten nominees. The list included such predictable choices as Gravity (which is sure to win), The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Thor: The Dark World, Elysium, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Oblivion. But as great as the effects in those films were, can we take a second to respect what was pulled off for F&F6? The film sported some of the biggest action set pieces in the franchise's history, and was essentially a string of action scenes strung together. The scenes were impressive to say the least, and accomplished not only with a bit of CGI but with practical effects and stunt work as well. The tank sequence is a clear standout, and will go down in history as one of the coolest car chases in cinematic history. So, as easy as it is to look at Gravity and appreciate the incredible effects work, let's pay a bit of respect to those who made fast cars taking down an airplane mid-takeoff a reality.
