Oscars 2014: 10 Movies The Academy Should Consider (But Won't)
7. The World's End - Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor
Edgar Wright's critically acclaimed and beloved Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy came to an end this year with the release of The World's End, a comedy about a group of old high school buddies who meet up in an effort to finish a 13-bar pub crawl in their hometown. Along the way, they uncover a shocking twist that threatens the very fate of humanity, and must fight their way from bar to bar in order to save the world. The World's End may just be Wright's best film, though only time will tell how it stacks up against the other two films in the trilogy. Regardless, it's far more than just a straight-forward comedy, and actually deals with some pretty heavy themes. Like all of Wright and Pegg's screenplays, it's incredibly layered and becomes a better film upon rewatches. What better way to honor the end of his trilogy than to nominate The World's End for best original screenplay? Or better yet: nominate Simon Pegg for best actor. Comedy actors continually get snubbed year after year, despite comedy being a hard genre to get right. What Pegg did in T.W.E. was phenomenal; playing a completely different character than we've seen him play before, who's just as layered and complex as the script.
