Oscars 2014: Predicting 10 Best Picture Contenders For Next Year

8. The Counselor

Ridley Scott hasn't exactly had the most consistent filmmaking career recently, but we all know how capable he is of making a fantastic movie when the script is right and the actors are game. The Counselor definitely gives Scott his best chance for a prestige hit in some time, given that the script is written by author Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old Men, The Road), and the cast includes Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Cameron Diaz. Not too much is known about the plot yet, except that Fassbender plays the protagonist, a lawyer who bites off more than he can chew when he decides to get involved in drug trafficking. Given McCarthy's penchant for dark, gritty, humanist drama, one can expect everyone involved is bringing their A-game and has something very special up their sleeves indeed.
