Oscars 2014: Predicting Next Year's Winners

6. Meryl Streep - Best Supporting Actress For August: Osage County

meryl streep osage countyLikely Winner: This category is a two-way tie between proven Oscar heavyweights. First, Meryl Streep for the comedy/drama August: Osage County. Even if the film doesn't turn out to be Oscar-worthy, Streep has a remarkable ability to not be dragged down by the quality of the film. Even if it stinks, she'll still shine. The other likely winner would be Jennifer Lawrence for American Hustle. Why? Consider what she has going in her favor. Not only is she the second youngest winner for Best Actress ever, she's also the youngest to ever get nominated twice. Not only that, but the director for American Hustle is David O. Russell, the man who directed her first Oscar-winning performance. Other Top Choices: Carey Mulligan, starring as Jean Berkey in the Coen Brothers' film Inside Llewyn Davis. Surprisingly, she'll be playing the wife (or sister?) of Justin Timberlake, but he seems to be slowly growing as an actor. Another person with an excellent shot at the award looks to be Jane Fonda, cast as Nancy Reagan in Lee Daniels ensemble historical drama The Butler. Fonda has already won two Best Actress awards, and she'll be playing a politician which always works well for garnering Oscars. Long Shots: That title belongs to Julianne Moore this year, starring in Don Jon's Addiction, the directorial debut of Joseph Gordon-Levitt. While Moore has proven herself to be a superb actress, it is possible she may be overshadowed by Scarlett Johansson or Gordon-Levitt himself.
