Oscars 2015: 10 Outrageous Decisions That Are Completely Wrong

1. Ava DuVernay - No Best Director (Selma)

The most instant and loudest criticism of this year's nominations (behind the LEGO noise of course, but even that's arguably less important) came with the revelation that Selma director DuVernay had been overlooked; the assumption being that The Imitation Game's Morten Tyldum had been included instead. As far as snubs go, it's a fairly egregious one: Selma was apparently deemed good enough to be classed as a Best Picture contender, but neither the lead actor nor the director seem to have had anything to do with it. That is a frank disparity, and it negates the fact that DuVernay's identity is all over the film, and her decisions far more loudly stated than even some of the so-called Dead Certs who made it onto the Best Directors list. Why It Went Wrong... The "final" slot of the Best Director pool was always going to be the most difficult to choose from, and the fact that the Academy had three strong claims from historically focused film-makers (four if you include Mike Leigh, which you should) was inevitably going to mean tears for someone. But they chose wrong. Do you agree with this year's batch of Oscar nominees? Share your thoughts below in the comments thread.
