7. Best Sound Editing
What Won: Alan Robert Murray and Bub Asman (American Sniper) Clint Eastwood's Iraq War biopic was the big surprise of the nominations, loved by the Academy after being overlooked by most other awards, and, with such a strong right wing push behind it, was the film with the biggest chance of causing an actual upset. In the end, it got just one award - Best Sound Editing - which was something of a surprise given how most people's assessments of Sniper's technical proficiency was that it was "competent" at best. It winning an award early on in the ceremony did add some short-lived unpredictability to proceedings, suggesting Bradley Cooper and co. may throw a real curve-ball. What Should Have Won: Martin Hernández and Aaron Glascock (Birdman) With Whiplash absent from the Sound Editing nominations, it couldn't complete the common Best Sound double-whammy. In lieu of the film about drumming, the film with a soundtrack dominated by drumming seemed to be the obvious choice, given how much sound added to the feel of Birdman's Broadway theatre.
