What Won: Big Hero 6 With The Lego Movie inexplicably absent from the nominees, it was a pretty open playing field for Best Animated Feature, although really it came down to Big Hero 6 and How To Train Your Dragon 2 - the other movies just didn't have a high enough profile to clear up in this niche section. In the end, Disney's latest took home the award, the Academy clearly connecting with Baymax more than Toothless. Feast, the short film that preceded it theatrically, won the Oscar for Best Animated Short, marking an Academy first. What Should Have Won: How To Train Your Dragon 2 How To Train Your Dragon 2 wasn't just a good animated movie, it was a good movie full stop. Although the kid friendly designs you'd expect were present and correct, the way the story and visuals were handled was above what you've come to expect from Dreamworks - as an action movie it sits comfortably alongside higher-tier blockbusters. When compared to the formulaic Big Hero 6 (it's a meldling of Disney conventions and the Marvel rulebook) it's clearly the better movie. Perhaps Big Hero 6's November US release just meant it was on people's minds more, Dragon already long since moved onto home video.
