1. Best Picture
What Won: Birdman This wasn't a year where Best Director and Best Picture went to different films, with Iñárritu returning to the stage once more before the night was out. Birdman had long been pegged for second place in the Oscar race, but a last minute sprint that saw it clean up at the Director, Producer and Actor's Guilds had it enter the night itself as the favourite. But, with Boyhood having only lagged slightly behind, there was still some uncertainly when Sean Penn opened that envelope. In the end, he gave the world the closest thing it'll ever get to a superhero Best Picture. What Should Have Won: Boyhood Now don't let the last couple of entries mislead you - Birdman is a great film. It's far and above the most deserving Best Picture winner this decade, possibly even this century, a fantastic melding of ambition and artistry that paints a story at once dealing with things incredibly current (the state of the entertainment industry) and eternally timeless (the plague of ego). But, put in the simplest possible terms, Boyhood is better. What did you make of the 87th Academy Awards? Did the right films go home with the prizes, or was Oscar way off? Have your say down in the comments.
