Oscars 2015: 8 Movies That Should Win (But Totally Won't)
2. Best Actress
Should Win: Marion Cotillard (Two Days, One Night) Will Win: Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) She's one of the best actresses working today, but there's simply not enough awards momentum behind Marion Cotillard for her to take the trophy. Her very nomination at this year's Oscars was a surprise, even if she gave possibly the two best female lead performances in 2014, in Two Days, One Night and The Immigrant. Rosamund Pike, meanwhile, has plenty of support behind her, with the ball having started rolling almost as soon as David Fincher's Gone Girl had been released in cinemas. While Pike is better than she's ever been in Gone Girl - a film that's been unfairly largely shut out this year - nobody in the category quite tops Cotillard. As a woman desperately trying to keep her job whilst struggling with depression in the latest film from the Dardenne brothers, Cotillard outdoes even the turn she won her previous Oscar for back in 2008, when she played Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose. While that win came as something of a shock, there's little chance the actress is going to be able to repeat that success this year.
Lover of film, writer of words, pretentious beyond belief. Thinks Scorsese and Kubrick are the kings of cinema, but PT Anderson and David Fincher are the dashing young princes. Follow Brogan on twitter if you can take shameless self-promotion: @BroganMorris1
