11. Achievement In Cinematography
The Nominees: Birdman, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Ida, Mr. Turner, Unbroken Who Will Win? Emmanuel Lubezki (Birdman) Who Should Win? Emmanuel Lubezki (Birdman) Birdman is mostly presented in one continuous shot. But unlike Rope or Russian Ark, the film is far from about what could be dismissed as a gimmick. Instead this method ties into the theatrical narrative of the movie and is employed so creatively Emmanuel Lubezki can also present some great single frames without it feeling forced. Sure, you can tell where the cuts are (doors are the key), but that's far from the point. None of the other nominees are unworthy (although it's a shame Unbroken can now proclaim "Nominated for 3 Academy Awards" on the DVD), but Birdman is just simply better.
