4. Star Wars Gets Nothing
In the year since the last Oscars ceremony, more cinema goers have handed cash to Star Wars: The Force Awakens than any other movie. They've often done it multiple times, in fact. If the 2016 Oscars fail to recognise the film that has captured audience interest more than any other, itll reopen the debate about whether the Academy even vaguely reflects the films that people enjoy the most, or just rewards the best period dramas released around February. The technical categories are where the Academy most regularly salutes action movies, and J.J. Abrams spacefaring sequel certainly has a chance of nabbing an award for its editing, sound and visual effects. John Williams score has a node, but its hard to see Ennio Morricones Hateful Eight accompaniment losing out there. Mad Max and The Revenant have good chances in the other Star Wars-friendly categories, too. Of course, The Force Awakens doesnt need an Oscar. Its the second biggest film of all time at the global box office and hasnt even finished its cinematic run yet. But still, Academy recognition for a film so hugely successful and widely praised wouldnt go amiss.
