Sicario is one of the most unflinching and violent films of this year, focusing as it does on the vice-grip of the drug trade on the border between Mexico and the United States. Emily Blunt serves as emotional anchor as an FBI agent well out of her depth in a top secret operation, led by Josh Brolin's mysterious cop and his shady associate Benicio Del Toro. Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve creates a brutally complex tale of the ways in which the war on drugs is being fought in the shadows. There was sizeable buzz around Sicario when it was first released in the autumn. Although that hype has cooled somewhat in the months since it hit screens, Sicario remains a terrific film and one that could pick up a handful of nods from the Academy.
